If you’ve just purchased a Jeep vehicle, congratulations! You’re now part of a particular group of people who get to experience the grandeur and performance of a Jeep. More than that, you’ve just made an important investment. However, one important part of owning any vehicle, not just a Jeep, is keeping it well-maintained.

Here at Spirit CDJR, we’re committed to our customers, and our parts and service department is here to provide all of the necessary upkeep to keep your Jeep on the road and running like a well-oiled machine. With the help of a certified Jeep mechanic, you can enjoy the most out of your purchase for years to come. So, let us dive in and discuss all of the important car maintenance you need to keep your Jeep running well.

Oil Change

Your engine has a ton of moving parts that require lubrication. Having your oil changed every few months or 5,000 to 7,500 miles is the most essential part of vehicle maintenance. The engine in your vehicle is a mass of moving parts that generates a great deal of friction, which in turn produces heat. The oil lubricates these parts to run smoothly and removes some deposits accumulating over time. Not attending to the oil can lead to more significant problems, such as increased wear and tear or even a complete breakdown.

Tire Rotation

Perhaps one of the most easily overlooked forms of maintenance is a tire rotation. Tire rotations are typically done at the same time as an oil change, and they’re just as important for your vehicle. As you drive, the tread on your tires wears down, which is why your tires eventually have to be replaced after prolonged use. To allow them to wear down evenly, you have your tires rotated. If you don’t do this, you run the risk of popping a tire while you drive to work, in turn causing harm to your rims and putting you at risk of a bigger accident. In addition to the rotation, you should have your tires balanced to make sure that all four of your tires are wearing evenly and no unnecessary wear is put on them.

Air Filters

Your Jeep will have an engine air filter and a cabin air filter. The frequency in which you change the air filters in your Jeep will vary depending on the type of activities you partake in and even where you park your vehicle. The engine air filtration system in your jeep is what allows cold air into the engine and keeps out the dirt and debris that come into contact while driving. If you’re a Jeep owner, there’s a possibility that you partake in off-roading. JD Power & Associates recommends changing your filter every 15,000 miles if this is the case. If you use your Jeep for strictly city-only driving, you can generally get away with having it replaced every 20,000 miles.
Your cabin air filter should be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. If you park under trees that drop acorns/debris or drive in a lot of dusty areas, you will find yourself changing the air filter more frequently.

Transmission Service

The transmission in your jeep doesn’t need to be serviced as often as your oil or tires. However, you still need some services and should have it checked. Changing or topping off transmission fluids will vary from model to model, but on average, people will have their transmission serviced every 60,000 miles.

Braking Inspection and Servicing

Your Jeep’s braking system is another critical part of your vehicle. Not only do you rely on it every time you drive, but neglecting brake service can present a substantial safety issue for you and other drivers. Much like your air filter, how often you need them serviced depends heavily on your activities and driving habits. It’s recommended that you have your brakes inspected by a mechanic every 15,000 miles if you drive in the city and maybe more frequently if you engage in off-roading. Your brake system includes the brake pads, brake fluid, rotors, and a few other components. Your brake pads may need to be replaced more than your rotors and fluid, but all of this will depend on your driving habits. On average, many find themselves replacing their brake pads, rotors, and fluid every 60,000 miles. If you have a hilly commute or do a lot of off-roading, this number is likely lower at 20,000 miles. The frequency does not have to do with the reliability/longevity of the parts but the driver’s habits.

HVAC System

Another item that should be looked at every 15,000 is your HVAC system. This includes your heater, air conditioner, as well as the radiator. The radiator is what keeps your Jeep from overheating during the summer and freezing up during the winter. As for your HVAC system, it’s important that it gets routinely inspected to ensure that all hoses are correctly connected. A faulty system can leak chemicals into the interior of your Jeep, and neglecting HVAC service can lead to mold if the filters aren’t properly cleaned and replaced regularly.

Battery

It’s very easy to take the ignition system in our vehicles for granted. We turn the key, the engine turns over, and we go about our day. However, this doesn’t happen if the battery in our vehicle isn’t functioning correctly. This item should be looked at every 15,000 miles, especially before the winter begins. There’s much more than having a charged battery; it’s also essential to keep an eye on the connection and keep them clear from corrosion.

The Importance of Using OEM Parts

We’ve listed the typical items of routine maintenance that we can take care of here at Spirit CDJR. However, we feel we should mention one crucial part of any vehicle maintenance: using OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts and fluids. Suppose you’ve been to another repair shop. In that case, there’s a chance that a mechanic tried to talk you into after-market accessories made by a third-party company. While the temptation might be there because of the price, only OEM parts are specifically made for your Jeep vehicle by Jeep themselves. Mopar is the brand you should be looking for when it comes to anything added or replaced on your Jeep to ensure you are getting the best possible product.
